Piedmont Fire DepartmentThe Piedmont Volunteer Fire Department got its start on November 10, 1914 with James Whelan serving as the Fire Chief. About 30 local citizens worked as hook and ladder men and bucket men. The Department used hand-drawn chemical wagon that was kept in a shed on N.W. Second Street. In the late 1980's, the department added a repeater system to the base radio station through a $7,500 donation from Royden Freeland, president of the International Crystal Manufacturing. Piedmont purchased its first new fire engine in 1984. In the 90's, the department acquired combination walkie-talkie/pagers for all firefighters, which allowed firefighters using only pagers to upgrade their radio. In 1993, the city contracted for the construction of Fire Station No. 2 at Piedmont Road, which was on land that was donated by Margaret Every Stout. In 1994, the department moved into Fire Station No. 1, on Edmond Road. The station and one of the new tanker trucks were funded through a two-percent sales tax, passed by voters in April 1992. The new rescue squad was purchased in 1998. It was featured in the August edition of Fire Rescue Magazine that year. Another national publication, Fire Engineering, featured the truck in its August 1999 edition. Also in the late 90's, the department acquired its first defibrillator through donations from businesses, citizens, and a grant from Prudential. In 2002, Mike Southard was appointed Fire Chief . Under Chief Southard and Assistant Chief Kuzmic, the last five years has shown tremendous growth in the Piedmont Fire Department. In June 2007, John Kuzmic was appointed the new Fire Chief. The roster has reached an all time high with twenty five volunteer fire fighters. The truck roster has also increased with the addition of a 1985 Command Vehicle, a 1996 Medical Squad, a 1999 Air/Lights truck, a 2003 Brush Pumper and a 2003 Pierce Fire Engine. An air compressor machine was installed recently at the station to fill firefighters self contained breathing apparatuses. |
