Lightning Safety Tips
Electricity from lightning is
able to travel through power and telephone lines. It can travel
through plumbing pipes, or electrical appliances.
If you find yourself in a
lightning storm indoors here are a few tips to remember:
 |
Make sure you are in a
safe, secure house.
|
 |
Avoid unsafe shelters.
Small open shelters on athletic fields, golf courses, parks, and
picnic areas are not safe.
|
 |
Avoid using the phone
and stay away from windows.
|
 |
Avoid contact with
plumbing such as washing your hands, taking a shower, or doing
laundry.
|
 |
Make sure to take care
of family pets also. Pets who are outside, in dog houses,
or chained to a tree are not safe. They need to be placed
in a home or garage. |
If you find yourself outside
during a lightning or thunderstorm you will need to take shelter at the
first sound of thunder. Remain there until at least 30 minutes
after the storm.
These are a few tips you might
want to follow:
 |
Find a safe building.
A building enclosed with wiring and plumbing are considered
safe.
|
 |
Find a safe vehicle.
A convertible or soft top cars are not considered safe.
|
 |
If you are out on the
water at the lake and you hear thunder, get off the water
immediately! |
