Lightning Safety Tips

Electricity from lightning is able to travel through power and telephone lines.  It can travel through plumbing pipes, or electrical appliances.

If you find yourself in a lightning storm indoors here are a few tips to remember:

Make sure you are in a safe, secure house.

Avoid unsafe shelters.  Small open shelters on athletic fields, golf courses, parks, and picnic areas are not safe.

Avoid using the phone and stay away from windows.

Avoid contact with plumbing such as washing your hands, taking a shower, or doing laundry.

Make sure to take care of family pets also.  Pets who are outside, in dog houses, or chained to a tree are not safe.  They need to be placed in a home or garage.

If you find yourself outside during a lightning or thunderstorm you will need to take shelter at the first sound of thunder.  Remain there until at least 30 minutes after the storm.

These are a few tips you might want to follow:

Find a safe building.  A building enclosed with wiring and plumbing are considered safe.

Find a safe vehicle.  A convertible or soft top cars are not considered safe.

If you are out on the water at the lake and you hear thunder, get off the water immediately!
