Winter Weather Safety Tips
Be prepared for the storm ahead
of time. Prepare yourself to stay in your home for a few days.
These tips might help you when preparing for a winter storm:

Make sure space heaters
are far enough away from walls and curtains to avoid starting a
fire.

Make sure your heater is
working properly.

Make sure you have a
working carbon monoxide detector.
|

Take care of elderly
people and get them prepared for the storm.

Check your radio and
television to make sure they are function properly so you can
stay on top of weather updates. |
If you have to go outside be
sure to follow these tips:

Wear several layers of
clothing that are loose fitting and will remain dry.

Always wear a hat.
|
 |
Wear something to
protect your hands such as mittens or gloves.

Cover any exposed skin
as much as possible to avoid frostbite. |
While you are traveling on the
roads:

Always keep your gas
tank full.

Keep your windshield
wipers in good condition and wiper fluid full.

Carry your cellular
phone charged and with you.

Keep first aid kit,
extra blankets, flash lights, jumper cables, and ice scraper in
your car.

Let someone know where
you will be traveling and when you will arrive. |
If you happen to get stranded
remember to remain calm. Stay in your vehicle and turn your
interior lights on and flashers to make your car noticeable. Run
you heater periodically to keep from getting hypothermia.
